What is Permeability: Ship Terms!

What is Permeability???

It is the ratio of the volume of water in a space that is assumed to be filled with water to the total volume of that space.

For example, if a 1 litre water is filled with pebbles and the volume occupied by the pebbles is 10% of the actual volume of the bottle.
Then, permeability of such a bottle would be considered to be 90% because by definition, water cannot be filled in the space occupied by the pebbles.

This simple rule is applied on to ships. The permeability of tanks and spaces is calculated for various reasons.
